What to know before you renew

Two recent changes you should know

Since October 30, 2025, the automatic work permit extension no longer exists. If your card expires before USCIS approves your renewal, you will not be able to work legally during that time.

Since December 5, 2025, permits for pending asylum and adjustment of status are issued for a maximum of 18 months, not 5 years. This means you will renew roughly every year and a half.

    What the 180-day window is

USCIS accepts your work permit renewal up to 180 days before the expiration date printed on your current card. Those 180 days are your filing window: before it opens, USCIS may reject the application as filed too early. The calculator above simply subtracts 180 days from the date you entered; it is not an eligibility determination.

What happens if you file late

The concrete consequence of filing late is a gap without employment authorization. If your card expires before USCIS approves your renewal, your employer cannot keep you working from the expiration date until the new card arrives, and that gap can last weeks or months. Your application remains valid, but your income does not.

And because each permit now lasts less time, that gap is no longer a one-time risk: it can repeat with every renewal if you file close to expiration again. That is why the date you calculated above matters so much. Filing inside your window is the only way to reduce the risk of being unable to work.

For the (c)(9) $0 fee condition, the G-1055 shows "N/A" in the online filing column: until we confirm it with USCIS, assume that condition is filed by mail only.
